In 1997, Audley became the British superheavyweight champion and retained the title in 1998. He then went on to win gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Audley doubled his gold winnings as an amateur when he defeated Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov and became the first British boxer to win Olympic gold in the superheavyweight division.

After his Olympic gold medal win, Audley was awarded an MBE in 2001 Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for his services to sport.

Audley turned professional in 2001 after signing a £1million contract with BBC Sport for his first 10 professional fights. In May 2001, he began his professional career with a first round victory, closely followed by several other convincing wins.

6ft 6 inch Audley continued his winning streak when he made his US debut in 2003. This led to him permanently relocating to the USA, where he was unbeaten in 11 fights, eight of which were knockout victories.

In December 2005, Audley returned to the UK to face fellow Briton Danny Williams for the Commonwealth title; he stepped in after Williams’ opponent pulled out five weeks before the fight, and lost on a split decision in the match.

After being knocked out by Michael Sprott for the European title in 2007, Audley made his comeback when he defeated him in 2010 and won the European heavyweight title. His only chance to be crowned the world champion, in 2010, was against David Haye for the WBA belt; he was knocked out in the third round.

In a brutal first-round knockout in 2012, Audley was put in hospital with a suspected broken nose and mild concussion; which subsequently led him into early retirement.

Despite this, he extended his career again at the age of 41, winning the Heavyweight Prizefighter event for a second time.

Good memory, honestly I couldn’t remember many of his fights but I can barely remember last year.

Most amateurs or pros would give their right arm for what he achieved, like you say never an elite fighter but should be absolutely proud of what he did in boxing.

Hehe    yessss! Keyboard warrior.
If it’s any constellation… my parents are obsessed with boxing and described career as an “embarrassing joke” after he became professional or something and the Olympics isn’t as high level and pro or something.

So he wasn’t a good boxer? I fail to see the need for an argument? 😀

    @Violet Your parents are ignorant.

Most professional fighters you nor your parents would ever even hear of. They never get near a televised fight, let alone any kind of Championship.

Would they describe a footballer who never played in the Premier League an “embarrassing joke” ? Or a Golfer who never played in the Ryder Cup? Or a Sprinter who never won Gold at the Olympics?

The only slight people can level at Audley is that he never won a World Title, but that is true for almost every sportsman playing almost ever sport throughout history.

Only a minuscule percentage ever reach the highest peak in their sport. That doesn’t mean everyone else is pathetic and useless.

Audley Harrison won far more fights than he lost, picked up a couple of the lesser titles (that most professionals graft their whole careers for yet never get close to) and he made millions of pounds doing it.

His professional career was better than 99% of professional boxers careers.

So by their assertion 99% of boxers careers are an “embarrassing joke” ?

Hahaha, I see our Bob can’t tell me 5 fights where he wasn’t cack . I could link to another 10 fights at least where he was awful.

I have been working in Liverpool today, asked 8 blokes who they thought was the biggest joke in British Boxing – 6 said Audley, straight off the bat – other 2 Price, though 1 relented when reminded of this joker.

Anyhow, boxing skills aside. I think he could be ok, deluded but quite funny with it.

@Bob Have you been watching this series? I haven’t been.

What’s the story with Gary Busey? From the comments it sounds like he’s not well and maybe the producers are trying to turn this into (even more of) a freak show?

Honestly I’m starting to get bored of it and I’ve missed a few now. I’m sure he can take care of himself.
I’m not sure why they put cbb on straight after standard bb.

@Bob I’m not watching and I’ve never met Audley personally, but I know a lot of guys in boxing (and out) who have met him and I’ve never heard nought but positive things about him as a person (and in the gym).

That counts for so much in my eyes.

At a time when the British public seem obsessed with the worst kind of infamy I hope one of the true good guys of British sport (note I said good guys and not elite sportsmen, I’d take one Audley Harrison over a million Andy Murray’s every day of the week) can prove that we’re not all only concerned with fake tits and botox.

If he actually won some titles ,which according to his bio he did, then he couldn’t have been total pants. He was obviously much superior to the folk on here who slag off his skill ,would love to see them have a go 😀 @sam 25
