During Thursday night’s live eviction CBS censored controversial  segments of Big Brother. During highlights of  an argument between Braden, Lydia and Kevin after the Power of Veto competition which resulted in Braden being nominated in Lydia’s place.

During the argument CBS censored segments of the argument where Braden used several derogatory terms to Lydia. Braden also used a derogatory term for people of Mexican descent to Lydia and Kevin. During the Tuesday highlights episode a homophobic comment made by Jeff was also editied out of the broadcast.

During the live portion of the show fellow nominee Chima brought up the topics once again in during her final plea speech, where she had one final attempt to persuade her fellow Housemates to vote for her.

During her speech she used the exact terms Braden used which were also edited out of the broadcast. She also brough up a derogatory comment Braden made about Julie Chen, the host of Big Brother and a co-host of The Early Show.

Julie Chen stated the speech was “the most memorable last plea speech we’ve ever heard.”

CBS released an official statement to the press regarding the reason the terms was censored saying the terms used offensive and did not meet the network’s standards. The only place to hear the arguments un-edited is the live feeds offered through RealNetworks.

CBS also stated that “any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by a houseguest appearing on ‘Big Brother,’ either on any live feed from the house or the broadcast, are those of the individuals speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program.”

During Big Brother: After Dark, the program which streams three hours from the House live during the hours of 12AM – 3AM Eastern Standard Time (9 PM – 12 AM Pacific Time/Big Brother Time) Chima revealed Big Brother (the producers)  told her in a Diary Room conversation that the derogatory terms she used was edited out of the broadcast. Chima told her Housemates she confronted Big Brother regarding the issue. Housemates are not allowed to discuss their Diary Room visits with their fellow Housemates except for who they voted for during an eviction.

“I said, I don’t think it’s fair because I don’t think they showed when it first was said,” Chima told her fellow Housemates during “Big Brother After Dark” following Thursday’s live eviction episode on CBS. “And I was like, ‘If someone’s a racist, they should be portrayed as one. You shouldn’t edit it to make them look good.’”

Just like in any country Big Brother USA has generated its fair share of controversy over the past eleven seasons. Adam Jasinski, winner of season nine, was fired from the United Autism Foundation after using an offensive word to refer to autistic children. Adam’s comment was made prior to the start of the live feeds that year and was aired during the Wednesday highlights show that year. Home department store, Lowes, pulled their advertisements from future episodes of Big Brother after the broadcast.

During the eight season, Amber Siyavus created controversy over her comments regarding Jewish people tend to be “really money-hungry” and “selfish.” This incident was not aired during any of the highlight shows or Big Brother: After Dark but was aired on the live Internet feeds. Amber’s comments created a media blackout lasting until Big Brother 10 where the press could not interview any housemates part of the jury that decides the winner of Big Brother. The blackout included CBS owned media like The Early Show and the spin-off House Calls: The Big Brother Talk Show.
