CBS has today confirmed that a ‘digital edition’ of Big Brother USA WILL premiere on its streaming service CBS All Access this fall.

After Reality Blurred first reported the news last week, today bosses have confirmed they’ve greenlit BBUSA’s first ever online-only season, which has been ‘developed expressly for digital audiences’.

It will be produced by the same team behind the broadcast TV version, headed by executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan – while long-time host Julie Chen will “be part of” the new venture.

The broadcaster’s press release refers to it as a ‘digital edition’ rather than the nineteenth season – suggesting it may be considered separate to the main Big Brother series, which will continue to be broadcast on CBS during the summer.

“Big Brother is an incredible success on the CBS Television Network and has always been ahead of its time when it comes to fan engagement,” said Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive.

“Already, the Big Brother Live Feeds are some of the most popular content on CBS All Access and with this new digital edition we will explore ways to reimagine this format for multiplatform audiences.”

Further details – including when the season will begin, how long it will last and whether it will feature live feeds – are yet to be confirmed, but Deadline reported yesterday that it’s due to start just days after the eighteenth season, which is airing on CBS until September 21st.

Big Brother will join Star Trek: Discovery and The Good Wife‘s spin-off as the third original programme on CBS All Access. It is the first of CBS’s television properties to directly make the jump to streaming, and it’s also understood to be the first show of its kind on any US-based streaming service.

The move also makes BBUSA the second real-life version of Big Brother to be produced for an online platform, after Big Brother China.
