Channel 5, Endemol set to renew Big Brother contract

Channel 5 and Endemol are set to sign a new multi-year contract for Big Brother which will include TWO Celebrity series annually, it is claimed.

According to The Daily Star, C5 has entered talks with the production company looking to extend their deal for the rights to the show, with plans to air another star-studded edition as early as this summer.

Traditionally, one ‘normal’ run featuring members of the public and one spin-off series have aired each year. It is unclear exactly how long C5 wants to renew the show for or how the normal version will be affected.

Executive producer Gavin Henderson said: “It’s being re-negotiated as we speak. It’s an open secret that Channel 5 have been very pleased with its commercial success as have we.

“I’m sure it will continue. When we moved from Channel 4 to Channel 5, it enabled us to make changes that we couldn’t in the past. We have been a lot more confident this time around in how we drive the stories forward and make entertaining shows.”

Big Brother has proven a success for Channel 5 so far, pulling in higher-than-average viewing figures and a younger audience, helping them achieve a 28% increase in advertising revenue in 2011.

It has also set new records, with the Celebrity Big Brother 2011 launch show becoming the highest rating non-sport or film transmission in the broadcasters’s fifteen-year history.

The current two-year contract – signed last April – is thought to expire after the forthcoming normal series.

Oh I hope not… I really hope not… They shouldn’t overkill the program. Very very bad move…

I hope C5 keep renewing it, but as Lewis said, having 2 celeb series’ every year could get to be a bit overkill. But that said, if they can get the good quality celebs that we saw in the last series then it can be a success! I still prefer the normal BB though

bad move if they’re going with two celeb versions. people will get fed up. they should keep one celeb version and one normal version.

Nooo!! I usually hate the Celeb version, it was only great this year because of the amazing hms (it wont happen every year!). The normal version is always the best, and I do enjoy 13 weeks of BB on my screens during the summer!!

That quote about “driving stories forward” says everything you need to know about BB on C5. It is very short sighted to concentrate their efforts on the celeb version rather than the main series.

Beginning of the end for the regular series, I wonder?

Well if was Channel 4 days I’d say no, but I wouldn’t mind having another celeb run hence why its Channel 5 it has to be slightly different. I wouldn’t mind if they try a year-long Big Brother like Germany did previously.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they dumped the regular version. The US dumped the regular edition of The Apprentice and now just run exclusively Celebrity series’.
But the loss of the regular edition would be a shame. Without the regular edition, there would have been NO celebrity edition. Big Brother is for the public. The Celebrity version is just a sweetener.
According to this Metro report (I’m Australian, so I’m not sure how credible this source is), the negotiations are set to include BOTH the regular and celebrity editions. http://www.metro.co.uk/tv/890046-big-brother-to-extend-channel-five-run-with-two-celebrity-editions-per-year
