However, Smith, who is currently overseeing auditions for this summer’s eleventh main series, which will be the last to air on Channel 4, added that there’s still life in the format.

Talking to Scotland’s Sunday Herald, Smith said: “I think it will benefit from a rest, but I don’t think this is the end of it. It still has so much more to give.

“It’s been one of the most talked about shows of the decade. It’s shaped TV history.

“Other countries have rested it, and it’s come back an even bigger success. I think that might happen here.

“I would be very surprised if this was the last you saw of Big Brother.”

Channel 4 confirmed in August last year that they would drop the Big Brother franchise after BB11. The last auditions for the series take place in London this weekend.

In August, after Channel 4 axed the Big Brother franchise, Woolfe said that they had no immediate interest in taking on the show. ITV, Sky, UKTV and Virgin Media Television also ruled themselves out.

However, the success of this year’s Celebrity Big Brother, which ended tonight with Alex as the winner, has changed the broadcaster’s mind.

Talking to The Guardian, Woolfe said: “Of course we’d be interested.

“What it’s absolutely shown is that we love to see celebrities facing jeopardy. There’s absolutely life in the Celebrity Big Brother format.”

However, regarding the main summer series, Woolfe added: “The main show probably needs to go away and be rejuvenated.”

Meanwhile, Channel 4 has said that they’re not going to rethink its decision to axe the show.

A spokesman for the broadcaster told the paper: “We have no regrets about our decision not to recommission.

“The show had come to a natural end on Channel 4 and we are excited about the new things we have planned.”

Sky has said that they’re ‘not in talks with Endemol’, while UKTV also added that they will not pick up the show.

This month’s Celebrity Big Brother, which critics including The Sun’s Ally Ross have describe as the ‘best series ever’, has reversed a decline in popularity seen during Big Brother 10.

It also saw a boost in media coverage of the show, which dramatically fell in the summer.

Endemol UK’s chief executive, Tim Hincks, has revealed they have a ‘relaxed’ attitude towards Big Brother.

“We’re focused on making it a brilliant show for ­Channel 4 this summer,” said Hincks. “I’ve no idea what we’ll be doing in a couple of years’ time. It doesn’t feel any less relevant now.”

He recieved 65.9% of the final vote, having emerged as the favourite to win just yesterday. His popularity grew throughout the series, with him leaving to cheers despite being booed as he entered.

In his interview with Davina, he said: “I’m very overwhelmed. What an amazing, fantastic start to the New Year.”

Discussing the change in public perception of him, he said: “I’m speechless. My whole agenda in here was just to be myself – I know I’m a good guy.”

Asked exactly who ‘Alex Reid’ is, he replied: “I’m here right now and I’ve won this, so it is a good start. Alex Reid is a man on a mission. He is going to win a fight in three months. And I’m a man in love.”

On this note, the conversation turned to his girlfriend Katie Price – prompting the crowd to boo her.

“I’m sorry guys, well, I’m not sorry,” he exclaimed, “but I love Katie Price.”

This caused the crowd to boo her more as Davina told him that Price was at the Big Brother compound.

On his friendship with Dane, he said, “We’ll be friends for life. I’ve known him, but I’m surprised by what a cool dude he is and what a gentleman. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of Dane.”

He also commented on learning about religion from Stephen: “I don’t claim to be studying every single day but I find it very interesting.”

After his interview, Alex strolled up and down the catwalk as fireworks went off around the studios.

The Another Level singer recieved 34.1% of the final vote. He congratulated Alex and hugged him before leaving the house to more big cheers from the crowd as the Kasabian song ‘Fire’ played.

Discussing the results with Davina in his interview, he said: “A couple of times you think, ‘oh God, I could win it!’, but I had my lineup. I thought I could come third, so second is brilliant.

“I think a lot of us are very, very happy Alex won. The last couple of days I thought I’d like to see him win it for various reasons. Now he’s his own man and can come out with a fresh new start.”

On his growth in confidence during the show, he said: “I was quiet at the beginning.

“I did start getting a bit more confident. I will actually say thanks to the housemates. It did make me feel a bit better. I started forgetting and singing about the house.”

“I was happy I got to cook. I missed cooking more than I thought I would. I suppose the only reason people could see more of me was because I was doing that.”

Quizzed on his Tree of Temptation task, he replied: “It was hard, the key’s a bitch! I loved it, it was great fun.”

Dane ended by summing up his time in the house: “I can honestly say I’ve absolutely loved it. I even said at one point I even loved the punishments.

“Maybe I have a bit more confidence. I’m actually now itching to work.”

The former footballer – who was shocked to hear ‘Get Vinnie Out’ chants as results were announced – left the house to more screams from the crowd, having recieved 20.2% of the vote at the third place reading.

In his exit interview with host Davina McCall, he said: “I think I brought the locker room banter into the house. I was having my own fun.”

Asked about his control and position in the house, he responded: “I was just trying to keep order in the house because a lot of people were selfish, especially around the fridge.

“I’ve been a captain all my life and I was just trying to keep some stability. I didn’t want anyone to go hungry.”

Regarding his row with Sisqo, he said: “He had one or two beers too many that night. I forgive him immensely.

“You have family watching and I’ve got a couple of kids and I know my boy would have wanted to knock him ou, but Sisqo is my man. He was the only man in the place who made me cry with laughter.

“He did mean it at the time. If he kept cooler he could have gone all the way.”

Discussing himself, Vinnie said: “I think I have got older, and I can see why my kids tell me I’m a bit bossy. I’ve enjoyed it and I just can’t wait to get home now.”

He added that his ‘changing room banter’ with Alex and Sisqo preparing for his variety show magic act are among his highlights from the series.

He had recieved 12.8% of the vote when the first reading was taken. After hugging his housematess, he left to a positive crowd reception while his number one single ‘Now You’re Gone’ was played.

Telling Davina about his time in the house, he said: “It’s been funny, hilarious, emotional and a little sad.

“But there was a lot of joy, I learnt a lot of lessons, and I’ve never laughed so much in my entire life. We all said that no-one wins – we are all winners.”

The obvious hot topic was his ‘romance’ with Katia. He said: “It’s really hard to know if it was love or not, especially in the house. It was emotional and it was like there wasn’t anyone else that caught my attention.

“It felt much stronger than it was.

“I’ve got over it. I’m alright now. There are a lot of beautiful girls out there. I am completely over it.”

After seeing a headline saying Katia ‘loves’ him, he said: “Too late, baby!

“The funny thing is, after a few days she sat down next to me and said, ‘Jonas, we need to talk. It’s just a game and you know we’re more friends anyway’.”

He also addressed Stephanie’s negative reaction to his brand of humour: “When there’s a bunch of people in a house it’s not just one person’s rules. I’m 25, I’m from Sweden and I love farts!”

She left the compound to a unanimously cheering crowd as the Dynasty theme tune played in what show host Davina McCall described as the most ‘glamorous’ exit in Big Brother history.

In her exit interview with Davina, she said: “I’ve had a completely blissful time. It has been wonderful.

“There was no telephone, there was nothing I could do. I had to just give up control and for me that is extraordinary. It was life as a child, really. It was heaven.

“I came in here to show everybody that I am not just a silly person. I’m not really a big bitch.”

Discussing her relationship with Ivana, she said: “We were elegant women of a certain age, so we both got up at 6am and abluted for a long time before everyone got up.

“I nominated her because I thought that the poor girl should be allowed to go to a dinner date!”

Talk turned to the other housemates, and Jonas: “I adore him, he has just developed in to such a super person. He doesn’t talk about faecal matter any more.”

She praised Vinnie: “Without Vinnie, there would have been no order. He was really, really needed.”

Stephanie added that she liked all of the tasks, except recreating the cow, and refused to name a winner.

She had recieved 8.6% of the vote to win when the fourth and fifth place reading was taken.
