Celebrity Big Brother 2018 housemate Rachel Johnson

Channel 5 has officially announced today that journalist Rachel Johnson, the sister of infamous politician Boris Johnson, is the first housemate taking part in Celebrity Big Brother 2018.

Traditionally, the long-running reality show does not reveal its contestants until they enter the house at the start of each series.

However, today bosses have broken with this rule by confirming Rachel as the first person to join the line-up for the upcoming 21st run.

The news was first posted on the official @bbuk Twitter page this morning at 7.00am, before C5 issued a press release.

Rachel also published the news herself today in a column for the Daily Mail, titled ‘Yes, I am doing Big Brother’. It is unclear whether C5’s announcement was a response to this, or her column had been approved by producers.

Rachel is a journalist and writer, with credits ranging from magazines Easy Living and The Big Issue to newspapers The Daily Telegraph and The Financial Times. She served at the editor of The Lady between 2009 and 2012.

She is the sister of Conservative MP Boris Johnson, but is herself a member of the Liberal Democrats, having defected to the party this year in protest at Brexit.

Rachel’s entry to the Celebrity Big Brother house will come less than a month after her and Boris’s father, Stanley Johnson, took part on rival ITV show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

C5 is not saying whether any more housemates will be revealed prior to launch night, which takes place on Tuesday 2nd January.

The last time housemates were announced in advance for a Celebrity series was in January 2016, when the entire line-up for the 17th series was outed a few hours before it began.

In a twist to mark 100 years since women first won the right to vote in the UK, the latest CBB will begin with only female housemates, before the male contestants arrive at a later stage.

Other names rumoured to be taking part include 5 News presenter India Willoughby, singer Ginuwine and former Love Island contestant Jonny Mitchell.
