A report has suggested that both Big Brother UK and its Celebrity Big Brother spin-off are ‘on the verge’ of being axed by Channel 5 – although other sources have disputed the claim.

The reality show’s future has been thrown in to doubt after both versions suffered huge ratings drops last year, and C5 boss Ben Frow admitted: “I would be much happier with a channel that did not have Big Brother on it.”

This summer’s civilian and Celebrity editions are the last two series guaranteed to air under C5’s current contract with production company Endemol Shine UK, which expires later this year.

Now fans are beginning to fear that the deal may not be renewed after today’s Daily Star Sunday ran a front page story titled “BIG BRO AXED BY BOSSES”.

Despite the seemingly conclusive headline, the full article reveals that a final decision has yet to be made, with bosses instead said to be “seriously considering” pulling the plug.

It quotes a ‘show insider’ as saying: “There have been conversations between the execs about not renewing the contract for both Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother. It would be the end of an era, but they feel the time is right for it to end.”

The source added: “Big Brother is a very expensive format for Channel 5 and it’s getting to the point where it just isn’t worth the hefty price tag. There is still time for the bosses at Channel 5 to change their mind, but it is not looking likely.”

However, other publications have disputed the story, suggesting it is premature and there could be a more positive outcome to negotiations.

Writing on Twitter today, The Sun showbiz journalist Andy Halls said an Endemol source had told him the Star’s claims are false, describing them as a “total flier”.

The newspaper then ran its own report, which says bosses still see Big Brother as a fixture of the C5 schedule. “Obviously there will be discussions with the production company about extending the show,” The Sun’s source commented.

“It’s far too early to suggest it’s the end of Big Brother, quite the opposite, so fans can relax. An extension of the deal is likely, it’s just that those conversations haven’t happened yet.”

Meanwhile, the story spread across the pond. US entertainment industry blog Deadline also indicates the Star’s story is untrue, with both parties still in talks.

Since 2014, Channel 5 has been owned by Viacom, the American media giant behind brands such as MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Paramount.

A Celebrity Big Brother spokesperson declined to comment on the situation.

I have been watching for a long time and can say that the civilian version has been total crap for the past 4-5 years. I wouldn’t mind if they axed the civilian version and just had CBB three times a year.

CBB more than once a year has been a huge part of the problem but suspect if it stays it will be CBB only, probably twice a year with two 30-day series.

Really though for a broadcaster to show they understand Big Brother it’s the civilian one they need to focus on. Hoping this news paves the way for it’s return to Channel 4 – not immediately but in the not too distant future.

Problem with cbb (in my humble view) … how the celebs are treated/punished is chosen on the celebs so called status … Wayne got punished for a small breach but a bigger breach by the so called love couple was ignored …
