Former The Apprentice star James Hill has beat his friend Austin Armacost to be crowned winner of Celebrity Big Brother summer 2015, claiming victory for Britain in the UK vs. USA battle of the nations.

The 28-year-old faced his American bromance buddy in the final two after Natasha took third place, with host Emma Willis claiming that only 2% of the vote separated them at the last freeze.

Once lines had closed for good, she spoke to the house and announced James as the winner, bringing to an end the transatlantic war than has run throughout the series. According to a Channel 5 press release, he eventually achieved a 45.16% share of the overall vote.

James – who was the bookies’ favourite to win – left to a roaring crowd reception, telling Emma he “couldn’t believe” he’d triumphed over so many “big stars”. “I’ve tried to be myself, put other people’s feelings ahead of my own,” he said. “I didn’t have a strategy. I went with my heart and my gut.

“When you go in, you don’t go in to make friends but it happens naturally. I got close to people there who I hope to be friends with for the rest of my life.”

The Yorkshireman described his relationship with “total legend” Austin as “outrageous”. “I am a loner, to have somebody to lean on in there was so nice,” he commented. “Austin’s a good guy.”

James insisted that his decision to nominate Austin following his outburst at Janice Dickinson earlier this week wasn’t motivated by strategy. “I even forgot about the end result,” he claimed.

“You have to think what was fair for everybody else in there. The way he carried on wasn’t right. I tried to sit down and sort it out. It would have been the wrong thing not to do it”.

On how he managed to keep cool in the house, James commented: “I’m a quiet person. I just started listening. You don’t get results shouting the loudest. It’s hard living with fourteen people you don’t know… you nit-pick on all sorts and end up arguing over boiled eggs. I tried to remain grounded.”

James – whom Lord Sugar fired in the eighth week of last year’s series of The Apprentice – ended with him thanking the public for backing him. The live final show concluded with him walking out on to the outdoor stage to enjoy the traditional winner’s firework display.

Celebrity Big Brother will return for its seventeenth series on C5 and TV3 in January.
