Big Brother producer Endemol has agreed to a ‘mega-merger’ with its sister company Core Media and 21st Century Fox’s Shine Group.

The deal sees the three brands unite to form the world’s biggest TV production firm, which will be a joint venture between Fox and Endemol’s parent Apollo Global Management.

Core – also owned by Apollo – is responsible for the Idols and So You Think You Can Dance reality TV franchises, while Shine is known for the likes of Got To Dance, MasterChef and The Biggest Loser, alongside scripted hits such as ITV’s Broadchurch.

Endemol, Core and Shine will continue to operate separately until completion of the transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval.

The news comes just weeks after Channel 5 was sold to Viacom by Richard Desmond, whose newspaper The Daily Star was known for relentlessly promoting Big Brother under his tenure at the broadcaster.

Now, in a surprising turn of events, the Endemol merger – which was first mooted in May – means Big Brother is close to becoming a distant relative of the tabloid’s rival The Sun.

Both 21st Century Fox and The Sun owner News Corp – which became separate operations in 2013 – are run by infamous media baron Rupert Murdoch.

Earlier this week the CEO of Viacom cast doubts over the future of Big Brother in the UK, suggesting that Channel 5 isn’t reliant on the show.
