Viacom is reportedly interested in renewing the rights to Big Brother UK after it became the new owner of Channel 5 earlier today.

This afternoon it was announced that the American media conglomerate has reached a £450million agreement to acquire the broadcaster from Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell.

Since then, in the first indication of Viacom’s future plans, industry magazine Broadcast has suggested that it is ‘looking to secure’ C5’s key programmes, including Big Brother.

Meanwhile, the company – which also owns MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon – is said to be keen to hold on to C5’s director of programmes Ben Frow.

Frow is known to be enthusiastic for Big Brother, stating last August that there’s a “good few years” left in the format – but adding that he was wary of becoming “over-reliant” on it.

He was also the man responsible for hiring Emma Willis to replace Brian Dowling as the show’s main presenter, a move which has proven wildly popular with fans and the media.

According to Broadcast, executives from Viacom International Media Networks – the division that handles Viacom’s global operations – have sent a message to C5 staff earlier promising “business as usual”.

Channel 5’s current deal with Endemol for the rights to Big Brother will expire at the end of the year. The last two series covered by the contract – this summer’s civilian and Celebrity editions – will begin airing from next month.

They better not try to Americanize the show. I live in the US and hate our series so much. Same thing with Canada — they’re the same show. BBAU/BBUK are the best.

Canada is a little less Americanized. You do hear the voice of Big Brother on the show a lot more, and there is a lot more viewer participation in the show than the American one, e.g. this season, Canada was HoH for a week, and Canada is the seventh juror.

I never believe anything that BBXtra says on twitter and I don’t follow him on twitter. But someone has said on a BB forum that he is saying that the new owner of C5 don’t want any reality tv.

I’ve looked on his twitter and he posted this ”Channel 5 confirm they are set to scrap Big Brother ! … ”

Is that website real or fake?

I’ve never heard of that website before and not sure weather it’s real or fake.

Hope it’s not true and that they will keep BB on CH5

Seenit’s article says absolutely nothing about Channel 5 wanting to get rid of reality TV – looks like he’s just stirring again…
