Comedian Jim Davidson has been dropped from the Celebrity Big Brother 2013 line-up after his arrest for sex abuse, it’s been confirmed.
Police detained the 59-year-old – who was widely expected to join the new series – yesterday as he came off a flight at Heathrow Airport in connection with Operation Yewtree, the investigation in to the Jimmy Savile scandal.
In a statement, Davidson’s solictor Henri Brandman explained that two women had made allegations of offences dating back 25 years which he ‘vigorously’ denies.
The ex-Generation Game host was later released on bail pending further inquires. He is due to return for further questioning in March.
A Channel 5 source told The Mirror that – following discussions with Davidson – it was decided that he will not take part, commenting: “Everyone has agreed that it’s for the best.”
Meanwhile, Daily Star journalist Edward Gleave revealed on Twitter this morning that he’d met his replacement, saying: “Just interviewed the celeb replacing Jim Davidson in #cbb and think they could be a potential winner. Really nice and razor sharp wit.”
His message sparked rumours that former footballer and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here contestant Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock will enter the house instead.
Davidson’s purported appearance was already controversial as it would have resulted in his reunion with Big Brother presenter Brian Dowling, whom he had called a ‘poof’ and a ‘shirtlifter’ in a homophobic rant while they were on ITV’s Hell’s Kitchen in 2007.
Celebrity Big Brother 2013 begins tonight at 9.00pm on Channel 5.
