Global’s programming boss says Big Brother Canada is on hiatus so the broadcaster can “try new things” – but has told devastated viewers it will “never say never” to bringing the show back.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that BBCAN has been shelved, at least for the 2017-18 television year, in a move that stunned fans the world over.

Now, in an interview with the Toronto Star newspaper, Barbara Williams – executive VP and chief operating officer of Global’s parent firm Corus – has suggested the decision was made for creative rather than financial reasons.

“We did five seasons, which was a blast, and it delivered a big young audience,” she said. “But we have to keep changing it up, we have to reinvent and try new things.

Williams did give fans a glimmer of hope, stressing it is a “hiatus” rather than outright cancellation. “We never say never for the future,” she continued.

“We are super proud of those seasons we did. But the best example is something like American Idol being cancelled and coming back. You never know what can happen.”

Her comments came after Insight Productions, the company that makes Big Brother Canada, insisted that it was not responsible for the decision.

“Just to be clear, we want to produce Big Brother Canada!” it wrote on its Twitter page. “Not our decision to put it on hiatus.”

Meanwhile, Williams confirmed that she is aware of the outcry from the show’s dedicated fans, who have started a social media campaign, #SaveBBCAN.

They have been flooding Global’s social media pages with the hashtag, including Facebook live streams from the network’s Upfronts event today.

Rob Cesternino, a reality TV podcaster and former Survivor contestant, has also created a petition which has attracted over 9,000 signatures.

A Global spokesperson previously told bbspy: “Big Brother Canada is on hiatus for the coming broadcast year. Global remains the broadcaster for Big Brother.”

It will continue to air the American version of the show, which returns for its nineteenth season later this month.

“But we have to keep changing it up, we have to reinvent and try new things.” Translates to “The show took up 3 primetime spots we can use for American shows”

I bet that there won’t be any new Canadian content taking over BBCAN’s timeslots it will be 3 new American shows
