Global has confirmed to bbspy that Big Brother Canada has been put on hiatus for the 2017-2018 television season, in news that has stunned the show’s diehard fans.

Hosted by Arisa Cox, the English-language Canadian version of Big Brother debuted on cable channel Slice in 2013, and was later promoted to parent network Global in 2015.

It has aired a total of five seasons, the most recent ending last month with Kevin Martin beating Karen Singbeil to win the six-figure prize fund.

However, today it has emerged that Big Brother Canada is going off air for at least a year, as it is not part of Global’s 2017-18 programming slate.

Confirming the news to bbspy, a Global spokesperson said that the show is on “hiatus” and stressed that it remains the broadcaster of Big Brother in Canada.

“Big Brother Canada is on hiatus for the coming broadcast year,” the rep said. “Further details will be announced at a later date. Global remains the broadcaster for Big Brother.”

Arisa also wrote to followers on her Twitter page, saying: “It’s been FIVE BRILLIANT SEASONS and now it’s official, @BigBrotherCA is on hiatus. MASSIVE LOVE to our BB fam from the bottom of my heart.”

A reason for the hiatus has not been provided.

The news has come as a shock, as Big Brother Canada has been a smash hit with viewers – both in its home country and around the globe.

Fans have praised the show for reinvigorating the American Big Brother format, while bbspy has previously described it as “the best in the world”.

Last year’s fourth season proved particularly successful, becoming Global’s highest-rating original Canadian programme for 2015-16. It featured an international crossover, with Big Brother UK icon Nikki Grahame and Australia’s Tim Dormer competing as a fully-fledged houseguests.

The hiatus has yet to be referred to on the official BBCAN website and social media channels.

You can’t tell me this show doesn’t make money! Why can’t Canada have something!…seriously! We don’t have any entertainment to compare to the states. No “the voice Canada” we had 1 or 2 seasons of ” Canadian Idol”. BIG BROTHER Canada is better than the USA version and the one source of popular reality tv and it’s gone?? Thats bull shit…. there are a lot of fans out there that are eager to watch every second day when it is on! Myself being one if those people.
