Sonia Kruger has cast further doubt on the future of Big Brother Australia, saying that Channel 9 has put it on the “back burner” – although the show’s official status remains unclear.

Nine hasn’t aired Big Brother since 2014, when it suffered a ratings dip – but the broadcaster has still not officially axed the format, and is thought to have the rights to it for the rest of this year.

The latest comment came from Kruger yesterday, when she told KIIS FM hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O that she thinks Big Brother could return in the near future thanks to its “core audience”.

“The thing with Big Brother, it’s always sort of sitting there on the back burner isn’t it?” she said.

“It’s one of those shows that I think, especially now when you look at [Network Ten rival] I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and that kind of reality show, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t come back at some point soon… not that I’ve had any discussions about it.

“I think there’s a core audience for it, and you can keep reinventing it.”

Nine offered Big Brother Australia fans a glimmer of hope in December when it posted a poll on its website asking if the show should return, with up to 95% of respondents answering ‘yes’.

In October it was reported that Nine had held early talks for a further series – but the last official comment came in August, when programming boss Andrew Backwell said: “We have no plans to bring it back, it is however still in consideration so we’re certainly not ruling it out.”

Kruger was handed a co-hosting role on The Voice Australia last year in Big Brother’s absence, and will now become its sole host this year after original frontman Darren McMullen left.

I feel like BBAU should come back this year but if it’s going be the last one for Nine at least then do something like Channel 4 did (Ultimate Big Brother) and bring back past BBAU contestants that would be Ace
