Big Brother 2017 UK to run for just three weeks

Controversial move means 'civilian' version now shorter than Celebrity spin-off

April Fool 2017

Channel 5 is controversially set to slash the length of Big Brother UK to just three weeks – which would make this year’s series the shortest ‘civilian’ series of all time globally.

Last year, the 17th edition ran for just 50 days – but C5 bosses are now set to go further by cutting even that length by over half.

A show source has revealed to bbspy that Big Brother 2017 is currently due to run for just 21 days – less than a third of the length of the original series, which aired on Channel 4 in 2000.

They told us: “This is a real kick in the teeth for the fans. They wanted the length to go back up to nine weeks after last year’s series turned out to be one of the best, but C5 has done the opposite and slashed it further.

“They’re in panic mode after January’s CBB didn’t excel in the ratings.”

The move is likely to hinder the show, leaving less time for storylines to develop. There are also concerns about how evictions would work, with sixteen housemates expected to take part as usual.

Big Brother 2016 - brand new live show set

One plan under consideration would see the show mimic ITV rival I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! by holding an eviction every day throughout the last week – whether they air live or not.

But for die-hard fans, the most controversial aspect of the change will be that the ‘civilian’ Big Brother now has a shorter run than its Celebrity spin-off. CBB will return in the summer for around 32 days, as usual.

Speaking to bbspy, a separate insider brushed off the revelation. “Oh come on, it’s all about Celebrity Big Brother now, isn’t it?” they said.

“We really tried with last year’s civilians, we promised that ‘the game had changed’ and everything, but even though the show was pretty much the same it failed to ignite interest.

“What do you want us to do, actually make those changes?”

A 21-day series would be the shorest full regular edition of Big Brother globally. The record is currently held by the Bulgarian version’s 26-day run in 2015.

It is rumoured that Big Brother 2017 will feature a joint housemate twist after bosses restricted auditions for the new series to pairs only.

Update, 12.00pm: If you haven’t guessed already, this was our April Fool for 2017! Or at least it is at the moment – it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if we end up rewriting this article for real in a few weeks’ time.

Fingers crossed Channel 5 takes note of the negative reaction it has received – here are just some of them…

Stay tuned for the real build up to Big Brother 2017, which is due to hit our screens in June!
