Big Brother 2014: Power Trip - Helen Wood

Ofcom has named Channel 5’s Big Brother as the most complained about television show for the third consecutive year – with the Celebrity version coming in second.

The ‘Power Trip’ edition of the show topped the media regulator’s annual TV complaints list for 2014, which was released this afternoon.

A total of 3,784 complaints were submitted across the series, with the majority concerning the controversial behaviour of Helen Wood, who was frequently accused of bullying other housemates – as well as the shock final result that saw her win over rival Ashleigh Coyle.

However, Ofcom confirmed in September that it would not investigate these issues.

The number is considerably higher than that of last year’s series, which drew a comparatively paltry 965 complaints. It also topped the 2012 series’ 2,088 complaints.

Meanwhile, Celebrity Big Brother shot up to second place on 1,784 complaints, highlighting incidents such as the arguments involving Gary Busey in September’s run.

Other programmes that made the top ten include Channel 4’s Benefits Street, which was accused of unfairly representing its participants, and a Sky News broadcast in which reporter Colin Brazier rummaged through the belongings of victims of the MH17 air tragedy in Ukraine.

Ofcom’s ten most complained about TV shows of 2014 are:

  1. Big Brother, Channel 5 (3,784 complaints)
  2. Celebrity Big Brother, Channel 5 (1,784)
  3. Cutting Edge: Going to the Dogs, Channel 4 (1,805)
  4. Benefits Street, Channel 4 (967)
  5. Coronation Street, ITV (367)
  6. The X Factor, ITV (360)
  7. EastEnders, BBC One (316)
  8. Emmerdale, ITV (243)
  9. Sky News, 20/07/14 (205)
  10. Channel 4 News (193)
