Big Brother 2014: Power Trip final - Helen Wood crowned winner

Channel 5 has taken the unusual step of releasing a statement responding to several accusations over Helen Wood’s controversial victory in the Big Brother 2014 final.

The broadcaster has traditionally kept quiet on public vote results, only releasing a full set of stats for the 2012 run.

However, bosses have issued a lengthy statement addressing various claims made by viewers following Wood’s victory, with TV watchdog Ofcom receiving over 400 complaints about the final – making it the single most protested episode of the series.

C5 begun by denying that it fixes premium rate votes, following questions about the terms and conditions, which state: “The eligibility of any vote is at the sole discretion of Channel 5.”

They also insisted that there had been no issues with the voting lines throughout the final week after some fans claimed they were unable to register votes for certain housemates.

“All voting during Big Brother is independently verified as the voting occurs and when it ends,” said the statement. “Votes cast are regularly monitored to detect any unusual voting patterns. Where there are discrepancies in voting patterns, consideration is given as to whether the votes should be included. No votes were discarded.

“When  lines are open, they are regularly monitored to ensure that votes can be cast on behalf of any housemate. At all times during the voting period in the final week, all relevant lines were open and callers were able to cast votes for whichever housemate they chose.”

C5 went on to list the amounts of votes separating the finalists at various points during the final day, revealing that the 1.2% that separated Helen and nearest rival Ashleigh at the last count equated to 4,631 votes. This marks the first time that Big Brother has disclosed exact numbers of votes in any form in at least eight years.

Elsewhere, C5 rubbished Twitter rumours that Helen was signed to an agency run by the broadcaster’s current owner, Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell, and insisted that Power Housemate Pauline Bennett had given her the pass to the final in a fair manner.

They also confirmed that Helen had received more warnings throughout the series than those that were televised, but failed to specify an exact number.

“Pauline knew nothing about what reward would be given to Helen,” the statement pointed out. “The first Helen, Pauline or any other housemate knew about there being a ‘pass to the final’ was when Big Brother announced to the House exactly what the reward was.

“Helen auditioned for Big Brother in the same way as all other applicants. Helen did not have an agent, a manager or any connection with either Northern & Shell or Richard Desmond.

“There were a number of informal interventions with Helen about her conduct, although these informal interventions were not themselves included in any broadcast. Informal interventions with other housemates, similarly, were not included in the material broadcast.”

The statement concluded: “Big Brother is satisfied that the outcome of Big Brother 2014 was an accurate reflection of the public’s decisions.”

Helen has proven to be one of the show’s most controversial contestants ever, with many observers having described her adverse behaviour in the house as ‘bullying’. Others have suggested her pass to the final – which guaranteed her immunity from every eviction of the series – meant she was undeserving of the win.

Ofcom has yet to announce whether it will investigate the complaints.

I’m sure I’ve read that there was only 1,000 votes between Helen and Ashleigh and that Heken received over 500,000 votes?

Pauline DID know she was granting a housemate a pass to the final: https://t.co/3p6RGKGvcB
So that’s at least one lie in that statement.

I don’t think it was a fix I just think people underestimated how popular Helen was, I hate the fact that her and Ashleigh made final 2 as they are both b******, I think that Christopher or Ash deserved to win

Think the way they reveal the votes is quite revealing – if they’d nothing to hide they’d just give the plain figures, not say how many votes X is above Y.

They also seem to be confused about what Big Brother is – whether “Big Brother” is satisified is irrelevent as BB is a fictional character.

As others say it’s more questions than answers – and this rebuttal, which isn’t in response to questions from OFCOM, just screams desperation.

    @amsms
I agree. She was told. Anyway it should be easy enough to check on that porkie pie.

Someone Twitter calculated the amount of votes based on the numbers BB gave. It turns out it’s mathematically impossible for those numbers to be true.

“Helen did not have an agent, a manager…” She has (previously to entering Big Brother) appeared on a number of TV shows, news programs, documentaries and also sold a number of interviews and “kiss-and-tell” stories to the press.

We are expected to believe that she did all of this without any professional representation?

We know for certain that prior to 2014 she had an agent trying to broker a deal for her auto-biography and for her to appear on “I’m a Celebrity…” as evidenced here: http://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/wayne-rooneys-former-escort-to-appear-on-im-a-celebrity-get-me-out-of-here-6423260.html

Are we really to believe that she decided to suddenly go it alone when negotiating for Big Brother?

Bull shit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41wXt8eGQRQ Here is the proof that the statement is nonsense.

Big Brother: “Pauline…who do you wish to grant that pass to the final to?”

This statement is a cover up. Helen did not have to go through the audition process like everyone else, she may have gone to audition but she was always going to get picked to go in the house, they were going to put her in last years celeb bb but changed it to normal bb to coincide with world cup. So bb producers had already been in contact with Helen well before the auditions for bb. I will find the article that states all this, it was her own dad who told the press, but she would only go in normal bb if they guarantied her she would not be first to go as it was vote to evict she know the public would get her out first, so they gave her a pass to final. If i can’t work out how to put the link on this site Il put it on twitter.

This is the link that shows BB producers already knew Helen and planned to send her into a CBB. Its not the article I saw originally that quotes her father but its similar. i will look again for the original article and if I find it I’l put a link up.
