Confirmed: Big Brother live feed axed by Channel 5

Channel 5 has finally confirmed in a statement that they are not bringing back live feed for their new series of Big Brother.

The broadcaster confirmed that the service will be replaced with a greater social media presence, which will include increased coverage on Facebook and Twitter and, for the first time, mobile applications.

“Following speculation surrounding the live feed, we can confirm there will not be a 24 hour live feed from the house available online or on-air,” Channel 5 said.

“This year we have decided to focus on the nightly highlights show and on directly engaging with the show’s viewers through social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and specially created iPhone, iPad and Android apps. The aim is to reflect the habits of our audience today and we believe that prioritising social media is the way to get people involved in the show.”

This comes after an earlier report from Broadcast magazine, which revealed that producers Endemol are looking to attract ‘casual viewers’ by altering editing techniques.

The decision affects both the 24-hour live streaming and afternoon and late night television slots, meaning there will be absolutely no live streaming available. Channel 5 is locked in to a long-term contract to air interactive gambling show Supercasino in the early hours.

Channel 4 previously axed the live feed ahead of their tenth series in 2009, prompting a massive backlash from fans. It became the lowest-rating main series ever, and bosses reinstated it for the final run last year.

Endemol obviously more desperate for Richard Desmond’s cash than Desmond was for BB. With him supposedly buying C5 just to air BB Endemol really should have held out for the live feed – after all in their sales pitch for the Big Brother format the factor of housemates being watrched by the nation “every minute” is the main selling point.

well after all these years they can count me out, the whole concept of “big bro” is that they are being watched 24/7 (or almost) not edited video clips, what a let down because i was really looking forward to this. at least they told us b4 thursday, i’ll give the whole thing a wide berth now as will the whole family.

o’h and to cap it all i’ve just read above that there is no app for the blackberry, what a total cock up, about 33% of teenagers have one, i’m blo*dy furious

excellent news i can now go and watch something else, oloved the show since day one but this has killed it for me as i dont watch highlights much.No live feed means this is no longer big brother for me Cant wait for launch night when other viewers find out too and when there is no snore feed either. The real problem will hit home when BB starts as we dont even know them and they can be down the pub or anything.

  10. chris says: Day -1 @ 12:33am | Reply

that means big brother chosses the winner …… just show the good side of someone on the highlights…what a pile of crap this is…big brother had its funeral last year this year is the wake…..bye bye BB….

  11. sc1 says: Day -1 @ 12:35am | Reply

Do you know what…. WELL DONE C5! They need to make big brother work and by using old techniques such as the live feed will only kill it faster. The decline in viewing figures just shows that the show needs to reach a entire new audience to ensure the show stays. For those who will refuse to watch the show because of no live feed, it’s your lost. Big Brother wasn’t even going to come back. I’m for one pleased it is, even though I would enjoy the live feed to air I’m just glad that the channel isn’t scared to try and move on, this way Big Brother will be around for longer.

Was expecting to see more ‘RIP’ comments than this, then again there’s not been 24 hours yet… thankfully Channel 5 decided to do their own thing and choose content they wanted to focus the budget on like the new production village, HD cameras and new multimedia website they’re launching… I’d rather them do that then blow it all on live feed and not improve anything else.

  13. BB2011RIP says: Day -1 @ 3:08am | Reply

    @Bentendo
Im sure you will not be disappointed with RIP comments tommorrow as the confirmation from c5 on website did not happen till arround 9pm. :D

The ‘Production village’ as you term it isn’t some super new addition it largely replaces the facilities they had in the George Lucas stage currently in use by someone else.

As far as HD cameras etc all fine and Dandy. As regards TV only a minority have HD TV sets and decoders. Also on Freeview large parts of UK has not got HD multiplexes operational to even broadcast it yet and whole of UK will not have it until Digital Switchover is complete in Mid 2012. Maybe they will use for HD clips of ‘action throughout the Day’ on twitter and FB ? I will not be holding my breath on that occuring given Endemol’s track record in past :D

As to a ‘New Multimedia Website’ Where is that ? If you are assuming it will be Bigbrother.com I think you are going to be disapointed. That is old Big Brother World Site Endemol had at one point then it was removed and that holding page went up with link to BB UK auditions site. http://www.bigbrother.com.au which was the URL of BB Australia also points to that holding page. :D

So I would have preferred live feed was retained insted and thus see nothing to be thankful about :D

Okay after reading the two articles regarding the live feed this makes me upset (event though I am in the US) I can’t believe that they would make a C4 mistake and axe the live feed. Didn’t they learn anything with C4 did this for BB10. I am predicting ratings will be 2.5 million for CBB and 1.6 million for BB12.

How hard is it just to put a live feed online and make money off of it? They could be like CBS and if there is something they want to persevere for the broadcast like the result of a task or a competition they can block them out. Since BBUK has more episodes per week it would work out better.

This just makes the US version look better again in my opinion and with Grodner still in charge that is a lot to say from a US/UK fan.

  16. BBLF says: Day -1 @ 10:02am | Reply

Clog Dont Block i think annoying them on facebook and website will let them know we are not going away.If we block them they will think we dont care and they will have won

The multimedia website is going to be channel5.com/bigbrother, which hasn’t launched properly yet. All the presenting team and people on the shows twitter have said the website is looking really good and emma said ‘exciting’. It won’t be a slap dash Channel 4 job by the sounds of it.

Beisdes, the live feed is just as edited as the main highlights show anyway. Certain camera angles chosen with certain conversations. Bird noise and aerial shots during tasks or main plot points being saved for the 9pm show. So the live feed in some respects is pointless and irrelevant.

  19. CH5BBUK says: Day -1 @ 12:02pm | Reply

I think if Celebrity Big Brother and Big Brother doesnt do well without the Live Feed then they might bring Live Feed back next year!

Matt do you think the Live Feed would be brought back next year? :D

  20. BB2011RIP says: Day -1 @ 1:33pm | Reply

    @Bentendo

‘The multimedia website is going to be channel5.com/bigbrother, which hasn’t launched properly yet.’

If you think that is going to be anything much more than Housemate Data
added, A few more articles and clips added and more links on it plugging facebook and twitter to what already exists on there I suspect you are going to be disappointed ;-).

‘All the presenting team and people on the shows twitter have said the website is looking really good and emma said ‘exciting’. It won’t be a slap dash Channel 4 job by the sounds of it.’

Well they would say that about the ‘multimedia website’ who pays their wages :D ?

I also seem to remember they said smiliar for BB10 about the web site. Do I need to elaborate how that turned out ? :D

‘Beisdes, the live feed is just as edited as the main highlights show anyway. Certain camera angles chosen with certain conversations. Bird noise and aerial shots during tasks or main plot points being saved for the 9pm show. So the live feed in some respects is pointless and irrelevant.’

No one said the Live feed was not edited that I have seen. Of course it was for a number of reasons I suspect which I can elaborate about if required :D . But it was not anywhere near as Edited as the highlights shows in my experience and IMO it at least gave a basic timeline to events that could be observed in near real time.

With no Live coverage whatsoever it is IMO opening a Pandoras Box to taking it towards 100% staged/scripted show and even the Housemates not been in house 24/7 after all who would know otherwise but Housemates themselves and Production crew ? :D

Keep buying their IMO hype/spin if that makes you happy. Others do not ;-)

But have we got BB Returning/Back ? Erm no what there will be on C5 is a version of ‘The Only Way is Essex’ in a house in Borehamwood masqurading as BB as they think the BB ‘Brand’ will attract viewers IMO.

May working to an extent for ‘Celebrity BB’ I think.
But the ‘Regular BB’ I wish C5/Endemol Luck they are going to need it IMO.

Thus I see no reason to be happy :)

This is just a joke, the show has not even started yet and you’re already saying its dead. Give it a few days!! Channel 5 are going to change the show in different ways, you shouldn’t think that its going to be the same as Channel 4 Big Brother. Wait and see before you start saying its dead.

  29. Brekkie says: Day -1 @ 6:23pm | Reply

So according to Marcus Bentley money is no object at C5 – yet they still won’t pay up for a live feed, even though it would pay for itself in terms of online revenue and increased viewing figures. They can’t afford not to have one really.

It’s disgusting they’ll shell out six figure sums for z-listers on a celeb BB that’s not really needed instead of covering the basics first. If they can afford Celeb BB, they can afford the live feed.

  30. BB2011RIP says: Day -1 @ 6:39pm | Reply

  31. BB2011RIP says: Day -1 @ 6:54pm | Reply

    @Brekkie

Totally agree Brekkie well said !

Have you seen the latest way to upset even more fans IMO ?

They are now getting Facebook to shutdown some BB UK Fan Groups and merge them into official BB UK Facebook page. This of course then boosts the likes count on the official page ;)

Desperate attempt to silence Critics and boost the like count on their Official Facebook page ? YOU Decide :D

    PS
Oh an in addition alot of negative comments are disappearing too apparently ;)

  32. BBLF says: Day -1 @ 7:58pm | Reply

well that was easier than i thought, just tuned in for 5 mins of oktv and i can say i wont be watching it again.trash tv at its best and the presenters lol.No live feed is making the first BB for me so easy to avoid so far.

To be fair, 99% of the cynical and negative comments on here come from you and your replys. Most people will get over the lack of feed and tune in regardless like they always have done as a core fanbase. Even if C5 get half the viewers C4 were getting they’ll deem it a success compared to the usual marketshare.

  36. BB2011RIP says: Day 1 @ 5:11am | Reply

‘To be fair, 99% of the cynical and negative comments on here come from you and your replys’

99% ? Hmmmmm I suggest you check again and learn how to calculate % correctly so there is no ‘fair’ about it IMO. As to my comments been supposedly ‘Negative and Cynical’ I would say realistic not fanboy without a reason :D

‘Most people will get over the lack of feed and tune in regardless’

I am sure Endemol/C5 are hoping most people as you term it will ‘Get Over It. ‘ I wish them luck in that they are going to need it IMO.

‘like they always have done as a core fanbase’

Have they not inferred they are changing editing of highlights to attract ‘Casual Viewers’ ? Does not sound to me like they are that bothered about retaining the ‘ core fanbase that has always tuned in’ from before and the total removal of Live Feed Coverage is but one manifestation of that IMHO.

‘Even if C5 get half the viewers C4 were getting they’ll deem it a success compared to the usual marketshare.’

Is that an attempt to reduce expectations already by you ? Surely If this ‘Celebrity BB’ is going to be so Great it could at least manage similar ratings to CBB7 ? I think Mr Desmond is expecting that and I sure would not like to be an Endemol executive if It got half the viewers overall and he comes knocking on door to find out why :D

Oh and BTW where is the ‘Mulitmedia Website’ that was going to be so much better than the C4 one ? :D

Also Where are the Smartphone Apps as part of this ‘Social Media’ supposed alternative to Live Feed ? Ah yes It appears they will not even be available until next week :D Got a Blackberry Phone ? Oh dear no App. Got a Symbian based Phone ? Oh dear no App too :D

Doesn’t Channel 5 have some other channels as well? That it could have been aired on. If only a few hours during the afternoon and late evenings-early mornings. Oh well…I am hoping I will be able to watch it, but not sure I will. I barely watch Channel 5 as it is. Guess I will record it, watch it at my leisure.

With live feed, at least people that say, I never watch Big Brother or Blog it, take a few hours of sneaky peeks at the live feed. You can’t help but to watch it if your a channel surfer.

As much as I LOVE BIG BROTHER, I think I will be missing loads of it. I don’t watch the other reality shows ie Essex, Geordie or Chelsea. The only difference with BB, will be is they are stuck in a house. I have only seen one episode of Silent Library. Thinking about it…Its not even going to be repeated an hour later or the following morning….

The social experiment is dead. It got so much more better in the last few years, when you could talk and express yourself online, have a gossip. Make friends, frienemies and foes online.

  38. Christina says: Day 1 @ 9:49am | Reply

  39. Christina says: Day 1 @ 1:21pm | Reply

@Luke Luke its not to do with them changing it. Hyping it, making it flasher, bigger or better. They gave us a taste of something and format we liked. Not everyone wants to join facebook or have a smartphone. Some people just want to watch the animals (housemates) at their true behavior. If your a fan of the other reality shows (with all the beautiful and not beautiful people) you may enjoy the edited version of BB. How can we believe what we see or they chose to tell us. Until housemates leave and tell us what was really happened.

I got 2 emails that are the same from Channel 4 saying:

    ”Dear Correspondent

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Big Brother. We apologise for the delay in responding.

We can now confirm there will not be a 24 hour live feed from the Big Brother house available online or on-air.

This year we have decided to focus on the nightly highlights show and on directly engaging with the show’s viewers through social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and specially created iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

The aim is to reflect the habits of our audience today and we believe that prioritising social media is the way to get people involved in the show.

Nevertheless, all relevant personnel have been made aware of your interest in a 24 hour live feed.

Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

I want Channel 5 to have a chance, I dont want them to be bombarded by miserable farts moaning about Live Feed constantly. If all you miserable farts move on, then there will be room for new viewers that will judge the show afresh. This can only be a good thing imho.

To all those at the Live Launch tonight, grow up or move on. Dont boo Brian/BB/Endemol/Channel 5.
